Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected on 22 May 2024 at a poultry farm near Meredith, in the Golden Plains Shire, Victoria. This was confirmed by sequencing to be a H7N3 strain, which has since been detected at six other poultry farms in the shire, including in both chickens and ducks. The last outbreak of HPAI in Australia occurred in the same area in 2020, which was a H7N7 strain found in chickens. On 23 May 2024 a separate H7N9 HPAI strain was detected at a commercial chicken farm near Terang, Victoria. No further properties were affected by the H7N9 strain of the virus. High-throughput sequencing methods allowed for whole genome sequences to be generated and compared to previous outbreaks. This is the first time two different strains of HPAI have been detected at the same time in Australia.
